Borders backs bid for Commonwealth 2014
Monday, February 6 2006
Scottish Borders Council Leader, David Parker, is urging residents of the Borders to back Scotland's bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games by showing their support online or by text.
Members of the public can 'sign up' to register their support at www.glasgow2014.com or send an SMS text with the word "Gold" to 61611.
"This is a great opportunity for the people of the Borders to show that they really want the 2014 Games to come to Scotland," Councillor Parker said. "A Glasgow Games would be a terrific coup for the whole country. Apart from a golden opportunity to watch first-class sport in action on our own doorstep, we could expect a Glasgow Games to bring solid economic benefits in terms of trade and tourism. If the Games does come to Scotland, we will be offering to stage individual events in the Borders and making our sporting facilities available for training.
"Scottish Borders Council is firmly behind the bid. I will be signing up and I am urging all Councillors and Council staff to do likewise. Back Scotland's bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow by registering your support at www.glasgow2014.com!"
At a recent presentation to Local Authorities, Sport Minister Patricia Ferguson said, "Winning the race to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014 will inspire thousands of young people to take up and excel at sport. The support of our local authorities will ensure the whole country can share the social and economic benefits, providing a lasting legacy for the nation."
The Commonwealth Games Federation will announce the name of the successful host city in Sri Lanka in November 2007.
