Road Signs

Signs have several important jobs to do on our roads and in towns. They can:

  • Warn of potential hazards
  • Instruct road users what or what not to do
  • Give directions as to where to find places or things
  • Give information to road users
  • Advise of road works

Often, signs can carry out more than one of the above functions. For examples of each type of sign, go to the 'DirectGov' Highway Code web pages.

The Council provides and maintains road signs for the Borders road network (with the exception of trunk roads). Signs are designed to patterns required by law by our traffic and road safety section and manufactured by our Sign Shop at Newtown St Boswells. They are inspected regularly and cleaned, repaired or replaced if necessary by the Roads Direct Labour Organisation (DLO).

There are two types of road signs used on roads in the Borders.Permanent road signs at a road junction

Permanent Road Signs
Permanent road signs are fixed in position, usually in a concrete base below ground, adequate to with stand normal wind loading on the sign.

You can report a fault with permanent road signs on-line, by using Local View, our fault reporting by map service, or call your local area office to speak directly with a member of our Road Network Maintenance Staff.

Temporary road signs at road worksTemporary Road Signs

Temporary road signs are usually used at road works where traffic needs to be warned of people working in the road and possible traffic control ahead.

The responsibility for maintaining temporary traffic lights rests with the person who has put them in place. Permission is required from the Council to do this. If you need to report a problem with a temporary road sign set, you should contact Lothian and Borders Police direct giving full details of the location.
