Litter

Traditional litter bin

The Council is responsible for the cleanliness of adopted streets, roads, car parks and footpaths by dealing with litter in two ways:

  • Providing litter bins in busy areas, such as shopping centres and public parks
  • Patrolling areas where litter is a problem and removing it

The Council maintains nearly 2 million metres of streets and just over 150 thousand square metres in other areas to the Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse.

Sponsored litter binThe Council currently participates in a scheme with the private sector, whereby the Council is supplied with litter bins capable of displaying advertising literature. The supplier benefits from the advertising, the Council gets a bin at no cost, and the advertisements make the bin more visible and thus encourages its use.

The Council's Cleansing Service  manages the problem of litter collection. For minor day-to-day litter issues, contact SBLocal.
