Before you submit your application
When you are sure that your proposal will need a formal application, you can discuss your application on an informal basis with the local planning officer. Provided you supply enough relevant information, the planning officer should be able to advise you as to what planning polices and issues will be considered particularly relevant to the determination of your application, and whether or not you should consider amending any aspects of your proposals before their formal submission.
You can also arrange to meet with a planning officer on site or in the local area office by prior appointment.
In order to ensure that pre-application enquiries are dealt with fairly and efficiently, the planning department will usually require that you submit a pre-application enquiry form. This should include your contact details, details of the site and your proposal and include additional information such as location plans and sketches.

Supplementary Planning Guidance
A number of guides in our Supplementary Planning Guidance section are also available to download on various development types. You should consider any of those guides which are relevant to your proposal before submitting your application. These guides include a series of planning briefs for specific sites in the Borders.
