Local Democracy
Information in this section includes details on how to get involved in local democracy, details on who your locally elected councillors, MPs, MSPs and MEPs are along with information on how to register to vote.
Elections for the Scottish Parliament and Local Government took place on Thursday, 3 May 2007. The results are available by clicking on the link above.
Getting involved with your local council
As well as being able to attend some council meetings and having access to meeting papers and notes, you can also contact your local councillor about relevant issues.
A councillor is elected by the local community and is there to represent its views, so remember to use your vote at the local elections.
You might also consider becoming a local councillor or working for your local council. You can contact Corporate Administration online for more details.
Review of Polling Districts and Polling Places
In accordance with the requirements of Section 18C(1) of the Representation of the People Act 1983, notice is hereby given the Scottish Borders Council is undertaking a review of polling districts and polling places for use in connection with parliamentary and local elections.
The aim of the Review is to ensure:
- that all electors within the Scottish Borders have reasonable and practicable facilities for voting; and
- that as far as is reasonable and practicable, polling stations are accessible to all electors, including those who are disabled.
The council would like to receive comments from electors on these issues, in particular comments of the suitability or current polling stations and suggestions for possible alternatives would be appreciated. The council would also welcome comments from any person or body with expertise in access for persons with any type of disability. The views of the Returning Officer will also be sought. Comments should be sent to the Head of Corporate Administration, Scottish Borders Council, Council Headquarters, Newtown St. Boswells, Melrose, TD6 0SA by Friday, 26 October 2007.
