Marriage Guide - Step by step planning advice
The most important checklist:
- If you are having a religious ceremony, contact the Religious Celebrant or if you are having a civil marriage contact the District Registrar, to agree the date of your wedding as soon as you have decided when you wish to be married.
- For either a religious or civil ceremony, contact the District Registrar to request marriage notices approximately three months
before your proposed wedding date.
- Return completed marriage notices to the District Registrar approximately six weeks before the date of your wedding.
- Remember that your notices must be displayed for 14 clear days before a schedule can be issued or a marriage take place.
- Confirm all the arrangements with the person conducting your marriage in the week leading up to your marriage.
- If your marriage is being conducted by a religious celebrant, collect the Marriage Schedule, in person, from the Registrar
in the week leading up to your wedding day.
- Immediately after the wedding you will be asked to sign the Marriage Schedule in permanent black ink, the bride signing in
her maiden surname.
- If a religious celebrant conducted your marriage, arrange to have the signed schedule returned to the District Registrar by
a responsible person within three days of the wedding taking place.
- Your marriage is registered on the next working day after it is returned.
- Your marriage certificate is collected or posted.
