Giving Birth

Registering a new baby's birth

Congratulations on the birth of your new baby.

  • You have until your baby is 21 days old to register at any registration office in Scotland.
  • If the child's parents are married to each other then either mum or dad can register the birth, if not then mum should register and if she wishes to include dad's name then he should attend the office with her.
  • Remember to take the form issued by the hospital.
  • An abbreviated extract of birth will be issued free of charge at the time of registration.
  • You will need to purchase a full extract (current cost £8.50 at the time of registration) if you require a passport for your baby.
  • The Registrar will also give you a form showing your baby's national health service number. Take this to your medical centre to register your new baby with a doctor.
  • Which office you should attend.
