Civil Partnership - Registering a Civil Partnership
Giving notice of your Civil Partnership
-
Civil Partnership notice forms and information regarding fees maybe obtained from any Registrar of births, deaths and marriages in Scotland.
-
Both parties to a Civil Partnership must complete and submit notice forms, along with the required documents and appropriate fee, to the Registrar for the District in which the Civil Partnership is to be formed. The signing of the Civil Partnership notice is in effect a declaration that the particulars and the information given on the notice are correct.
-
The notices must be submitted early enough to enable the Registrar to ensure that the parties are free to form a Civil Partnership. Normally notices should be submitted to the Registrar about six weeks before the date of the Civil Partnership registration. The minimum period is 15 clear days before the Civil Partnership can be formed on the 16th day.
-
It is not necessary for both parties to be present to give notice.
Documents to be produced when submitting Civil Partnership notices
Please contact the District Registrar for guidance.
A Civil Partnership without a ceremony, may be carried out in the Registration Office by an authorised Registrar, or at an agreed place or venue in the Registration District.
In addition to the authorised Registrar, both parties to the Civil Partnership must be present and also two witnesses, who must both be 16 years of age or over. No one else need be present.
Once the schedule is signed by all parties, an extract will be issued. You have both now attained the new status of Civil Partner.
