Probation Supervision
Probation services are a key component of Criminal Justice Social Work Services. Extensive research into the effectiveness of probation practice has identified broad ‘Principles of effective intervention’, and we will work to incorporate these into probation practice. A range of modular individual and groupwork programmes, informed by these principles are currently in use.
The intensity of probation intervention is linked to the level of risk of re-offending, while intervention focuses on ‘criminogenic’ needs – those factors in a person’s life which support or sustain their offending – e.g. problem alcohol or drug use, poor problem solving skills, low awareness of personal responsibility, anti-social attitudes, poor social skills.
Objectives
- To reduce the risk of re-offending by combining supervision and control with help, encouragement and challenge.
- To target probation on higher-risk offenders, in accordance with government policy and the ‘effectiveness research’.
- To incorporate the effectiveness principles into our probation practice.
- To publish a range of performance information annually on probation, to enhance our accountability to funders, courts and the community.
