Supervised Attendance Orders
The Supervised Attendance Order Scheme provides criminal courts with a credible community-based alternative to imprisonment in cases when an offender defaults on the payment of a fine. The intention is to substitute a fine with a time penalty which provides constructive activity.
An Order may be between 10 and 100 hours in duration and the amount of hours imposed normally has to be completed within 12 months of sentence.
There are 3 elements of activity undertaken:
- educational training such as First Aid or Parenting Courses
- personal development training such as Employment Preparation or Adult Literacy
- voluntary work with local charities or on an environmental project team.
Objectives
- To ensure the service meets the requirements of the courts.
- To ensure effective enforcement of the conditions of the Order.
- To ensure that a sufficient number and range of activity optionsare available to meet the requirements of the courts and which are suited to the ability and availability of each offender.
- To ensure that the activities carried out are constructive and of benefit to the offender.
- To publish a range of performance information annually.
