Drug Treatment and Testing Service
The Drug Treatment and Testing Service works with serious drug misusers whose offending is connected to their drug use. It aims to stop or reduce problem drug use and achieve positive changes to the scale and frequency of drug related offending. The service is a joint partnership between Turning Point Scotland, the Big River Project, NHS Borders and the Criminal Justice Team at Social Work Services.
Who is it for?
The service is for anyone (aged 16 and over) who is appearing before the Sheriff/High Court who is dependent on or misuses drugs. The offender is required to undergo a period of treatment and testing under the weekly supervision of an addiction worker or member of nursing and social work staff. Treatment programmes are evaluated monthly at Court by the Sheriff and can include:
- individual counselling, information and advice
- detoxification/substitute prescribing
- groupwork
- community day programmes and dispensing.
This service is an entirely different sentence from a probation or other court order. An offender may be subject to other orders such as community service, probation or restriction of liberty at the same time.
