Meals at Home

Meals at Home is a service delivering pre-cooked, frozen meals to you in your own home.  Delivered direct to your freezer, the service offers choice from an extensive menu of high-quality, nutritious meals with the flexibility of having a hot meal when you want it.  The service is for people with community care needs who are unable to shop or prepare meals for themselves.

How do I get the service?
The first step to getting this service is to contact your local Social Work office.  Depending on your individual circumstances, we may need to visit you to assess how much support you need.

What will this service cost me?
The cost can be found in our leaflet Information on Charges for Care at Home Services (pdf 140kb).  There will be a small extra charge for meals in the Premium Range.  Prices are revised annually.  When your delivery person visits you, they will collect the amount due for your meals.  You can pay by cash or cheque.

What does each meal consist of?
Each meal contains two courses: either a main course and soup, or a main course and a sweet.  You will be assessed by Social Work staff to agree the number of meals you will receive.

How do I order my meal?
We will provide you with a menu and an order form from which you can select your meals.  On each fortnightly visit, the delivery person will deliver your current order and collect the order for the next visit in two weeks' time.

When will my meals be delivered?
A regular delivery day, once a fortnight, will be arranged with you.  Your meals will be delivered between 8:30am and 4:30pm.  With your permission, the delivery person will place the meals directly into your freezer, ensuring that they are safely stored.  Your delivery person will wear a uniform and will have an identity badge.

Are any special dietary meals available?
Currently the following diets are available: Gluten-free, Soft Diet, Diabetic, Vegetarian, Low Sodium, Reducing / Lower Calorie, Higher Energy, Lower Fat.

How do I heat my meals?
Meals and soups/sweets can be heated in either an oven or a microwave.  If you do not have an oven or microwave, we can loan you a microwave at no extra cost.  Also, if your freezer is unsuitable for storing a stock of frozen food we can loan you a tabletop freezer free of charge.  All meals should be heated from frozen and reheating instructions will be given to you by your delivery person.  Most people find that they are able to reheat the meals for themselves and enjoy the flexibility of being able to eat when they want.  However, a Home Care Assistant can provide help at mealtimes if this is needed and this will be determined when you have your assessment.

Who looks after the equipment I have on loan?
Your delivery person will check the equipment on a regular basis. Cleaning the equipment will be your responsibility.
