Waste Disposal

The majority of commercial and domestic waste from the Borders goes to landfill, even though Scottish Borders Council is one of the leading local authorities in Scotland in meeting government targets for recycling. There is only one landfill site currently operating in the Borders which is at Easter Langlee, Galashiels. Other waste is transported to sites outwith the Borders.
Waste disposal facilities are available to the public as shown below. Click on a link for more information.
The Lothian and Borders Waste Management Project
A plan to build a more sustainable Scotland was outlined by the five Councils of the Lothian and Borders area in an Outline Business Case submitted to the Scottish Government on 28th September 2007. This involved the shared procurement of a regional waste processing facility. However, this project will not now be going ahead, as the proposal is not compliant with new waste management policies introduced by the Scottish Government in January 2008.
The partner authorities (Scottish Borders, City of Edinburgh, West Lothian, East Lothian and Midlothian Councils) are now considering if local projects, or projects delivered between one of more of the Councils would be the best way forward – but a joint approach by all 5 now seems unlikely. Nevertheless, the Councils have agreed to continue their overall collaboration technically and politically, as before. More details should be available later in 2008.
