Waste Awareness
Waste Awareness
Every year we create more and more waste and disposing of this waste can damage the environment forever. The most effective way to cut waste is to reduce what we use in the first place. Reusing materials is the next most effective habit and then recycling brings up the rear, as it often involves using natural resources (for example fuel is needed for power to manufacture new products).
Recycling and the Environment
We encourage everyone to explore the issues involved in waste and recycling. Learn ways in which you can help Reduce, Reuse or Recycle – and cut the amount of waste you dispose of. See more about Recycling and the environment.
Community partnerships
We are developing a network of community partners – often not-for-profit organisations – whose activities help reduce or reuse waste. Find out about the work our partners are doing and see how to support them.
Generous Scottish Borders
One way in which you can help cut waste is by donating your unwanted goods to charity shops. You can also help by buying items from charity shops. Working with ChangeWorks, the Council has published a guide of charity shops in the Scottish Borders. If you live in the Borders you will have received a copy of the guide inside your leaflet about waste and recycling services delivered in February 2008. You can read more about donating to charity and how it helps reduce waste on the "Generous Scottish Borders" page.
For schools
We are committed to raising awareness about the 3 Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – and to changing attitudes and behaviour towards waste. An important part of that commitment is reflected in the Recycling Team’s work with schools. The Council is also committed to the EcoSchools programme. See our resources for pupils and teachers here.
