Waste & Recycling for householders
Kerbside collections (waste & recycling)
Every household in the Scottish Borders has weekly kerbside recycling and general waste collections. Paper, cardboard, cans, cartons and plastics are put out for collection in recycling bags, while general waste is presented in wheeled bins. You can get more information about this.
Community Recycling Centres and Points
You can recycle glass and textiles at the Recycling Points located in towns and villages across the Borders. A wider range of recycling facilities can be found at the Community Recycling Centres in Hawick, Eshiels (near Peebles), Galashiels, Duns, Eyemouth and Selkirk. You can find out more about these facilities and the materials that can be recycled there by visiting the "Sort It" Web Site.
Waste disposal facilities
Items of household refuse can be recycled, or disposed of, free of charge at the Community Recycling Centres. Temporary disposal facilities are provided regularly in Lauder, Kelso, Jedburgh and Newcastleton.
Special collections
The Council offers a special collection service for large household items including mattresses, sofas, and fridges or freezers. There is a charge for this service.
Garden waste and Home composting
In urban areas, during the growing season, garden waste is collected weekly from green-lidded wheeled bins presented on the kerbside. Householders in rural areas have free home composters to help them reduce their garden waste. Free advice on home composting is available to all households in the Scottish Borders from ASK Organic (Tel 01450 860778; email: da@askorganic.co.uk, web site: www.askorganic.co.uk) or the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) on 0845 600 0323.
