Carton recycling

Cartons
The Council introduced kerbside collections of paper-based food and drinks cartons in February 2008.
UK firms make about 55,000 tonnes of paper-based cartons (such as those made by Tetra Pak) every year to be used as food and drinks containers (like those used for milk etc.) This means the average household throws over two kilograms of these cartons in the waste bin every year which could be recycled.
In 2007, working with Tetra Pak and the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE), the Council introduced kerbside collections of paper-based food and drinks cartons at Community Recycling Centres. Now you can recycle them both from the kerbside and at Community Recycling Centres.
Once collected, the cartons are baled and are then taken to a recycling mill where they are turned into a range of products including plasterboard liner, paper bags and envelopes. Read more information about the Waste Journey of paper-based food and drinks cartons.
You should unscrew and discard the removable plastic cap from the carton before recycling, but you do not have to take off any plastic part that remains on the carton as this is done in the recycling process.
