Health benefits from Walk It

Walking just 30 minutes, 5 times a week at a brisk pace is now thought of as an ideal form of exercise because:

  • It’s free
  • Almost anyone can do it (including wheelchair users)
  • You can easily fit it into your daily routine
  • It doesn’t put extra stress on your body or joints
  • You can do it at your own pace
  • You can build up stamina over time
  • You can do it alone or with other people
  • It makes you healthier and reduces stress
  • It’s fun

What is a brisk pace? When you walk at a brisk pace you should:

  • Feel a little warmer - not pouring sweat;
  • Your heart should beat a little faster - not pounding in your chest;
  • Be able to talk while walking – if you gasping to speak, you’re walking too fast!
  • The pace of a brisk walk will vary between people – the fitter you are the faster your brisk pace.
  • What’s really important is that you go at your own pace, not someone else’s – it’s not a competition!

Remember to use the walkin’ talkin’ test! You don’t need to wear yourself out to get fit. Taking it at the right pace is much better for you and you’ll enjoy it more.

Being physically active can bring many health benefits and walking is a great way to get started. The less active someone is the greater the benefit that they will feel when they get started, so get started come along to one of our walks.
