Scottish Border Paths

Scottish Border Paths - Countryside Access Development

Scottish Border Paths was a project supported by Scottish Enterprise Borders, Scottish Natural Heritage, Visit Scotland (Borders), Paths for All and Scottish Borders Council.  It is also part-financed via the European Union. The Project ended on 3st 1December 2007.

The Project's aim was to develop a high quality access network for walkers, cyclists and horse riders of all ages and abilities, based on local community and visitor needs and aspirations, reflecting clear economic, social and environmental benefits.
Since its inception in 1994 Scottish Border Paths has carried out works to develop and improve paths for local residents and visitors. These include long distance routes such as St. Cuthbert's Way (100km Melrose to Lindisfarne), the Berwickshire Coastal Path (24km Berwick to St. Abbs) the John Buchan Way (22km Peebles to Broughton) and the Borders Abbeys Way (105km).  In addition the project also created shorter routes around settlements and produced a variety of booklets for Jedburgh, Peebles, Selkirk, Hawick, Newcastleton and East Berwickshire.  Booklets for Galashiels, Coldstream and Duns are currently being produced.

The project also assisted the organisation of access based events including Borders Cycling Festival, Festival of the Horse and a week long Scottish Borders Festival of Walking.  This year the Festival of Walking is based in Selkirk.  In 2007, the Festival of Walking will be based in Kelso, followed by Galashiels in 2008.

Promotional leaflets of these routes and Festivals are available from Visit Scotland Borders Tourist Information Centres (Information Service: 0870 608 0404)
The planning of these paths has, since June 2005 been carried out entirely by Scottish Borders Council staff working to the requirements of the Border Paths Steering Group.  Implementation works may be carried out by contractors selected from Scottish Borders Council's approved list.
The scale of expenditure by Scottish Border Paths on such works over the next two years will be in the order of £300,000.
