Natural Heritage
The Scottish Borders has a rich natural heritage. Our beautiful landscapes, and the wildlife that inhabits them, make the Borders a special place in which to live, work and relax. Our natural heritage is also a key asset supporting many sectors of the region’s economy and quality of life.
The rich variety of these landscapes is reflected in the range of habitats that are found here. These habitats include the coast, rivers and lochs, woodland and arable fields, remote hilltops and towns and villages.
We are committed, with our partners to a Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP). This will lead to the reversal of actions that have seen the local decline or even extinction of animal and plant species. Part of the process will be the creation of Habitat Action Plans (HAPs) and priority lists of species and habitats of conservation concern. Under the LBAP, the Borders Wetland Vision project is developing a strategic approach to wetland conservation in Scottish Borders. A full copy of the Borders Wetland Vision report is available to download.
We are working with landowners and farmers on projects to help protect some of our rare bird and butterfly species. Advice on wildlife issues can be obtained from the Ecology Officer or the Countryside Rangers.
