Local Biodiversity Action Plan
Did you know the Scottish Borders has its own Local Biodiversity Action Plan ( LBAP )? This plan provides a structure upon which we can focus our activities to benefit the species and habitats of our region. The plan sets out the key priorities for preserving and improving our natural heritage.
What are we doing?
Our aim is to benefit our most important wildlife and also create opportunities for us all to become involved in preserving
and enjoying our natural heritage. Looking after our biodiversity is a key part of sustainable development that will allow us to balance the needs of housing
and industry with those of the natural environment. We are in the process of producing detailed Habitat Action Plans which focus on our key habitats and what steps need to be taken to tackle the threats to them. The LBAP also informs Rural
Stewardship Scheme for which we have an approved list of species and habitats. Supplementary Planning Guidance for biodiversity has been produced.
Under the LBAP, the Borders Wetland Vision Project is developing a strategic approach to wetland conservation in Scottish Borders. A full copy of the Borders Wetland Vision report is available to download.
What can you do?
Biodiversity begins at home. Gardens are very important for our bird populations and you can really help our wildlife in your back garden. There are a number of initiatives in which you can take part:
- Borders Backyard Biodiversity run by the local Biological Records Centre
- Garden for Life
- School grounds projects
- Community woodland initiatives
- Consider woodfuel heating
There are also other initiatives in which you can take part. Everyone can help and everyone can benefit. Please note that the links in the "What can you do" section are to external websites.
