Planning & Implementation: Environmental Strategy
Quality of life
The quality of the environment is one of the Scottish Borders’ greatest assets. It adds to the quality of life of Borderers and visitors alike. It also forms a strong basis for investment in jobs, such as those in tourism.
Many things can damage this local resource. For example our increasing use of the car can upset rural peace and quiet and affect air quality.
The challenge doesn’t stop there as many activities have wider impacts. For example, use of the car also contributes to global warming, which is partially caused by our use of energy from a non renewable source such as fossil fuels.
Environmental Strategy and Action Plan
- You can either read the Environmental Strategy online or download it in full in PDF format
- The Action Plan can be downloaded in PDF format.
- Scottish Borders Council's Corporate Environmental Action Plan 2004-07.
This forms part of the Council’s and the New Ways (Community Planning) process. It plays a key role in fulfilling the Council’s obligations and commitments to sustainability and the Local Agenda 21 process. It focuses on the whole range of environmental issues, including waste, energy, transport, purchasing, and the natural and historic environment.
The strategy is about action here in the Scottish Borders to protect and improve the local and global environment. It proposes actions to be carried out by the organisations that have become signatories to the strategy, and guidance for other groups and the general public.
