Life in the Borders

Countryside Ranger Service

The Ranger Service provides the "public face" of the Council’s countryside function. Our role is to:

  • help people of all ages to enjoy and understand the Borders countryside
  • help protect and improve the areas of land and water visited by the public
  • encourage co-operation between landowners and users.

Teachers can arrange for one of us to give a talk, help choose an appropriate study site, or lead activities and walks - all tailored to students’ needs.

Community organisations can enlist our help, through advice, illustrated talks or in a guiding role in local conservation projects or environmental activities.

We undertake an annual programme of guided walks (link to external website) for locals and visitors alike. Additional walks (landowners consenting) can be arranged for special interest groups and organisations. Why don't you read about recent ranger-led walks along one of the long-distance routes through the region - the Borders Abbeys Way?

The Ranger Service has also been working with the Ability Centre, Galashiels to update the list of places to visit with easy access. This external website gives information on some of the parts of the Borders countryside which can be visited by wheelchair users.

We also help to ensure that several countryside sites and over 400km of promoted paths are well maintained.
