Listed Buildings
The Scottish Ministers are required to compile lists of buildings of special architectural or historic interest. This work is undertaken by Historic Scotland. These buildings are known as "Listed Buildings". The whole building or structure is "listed", including both the interior and exterior; so there is no such thing as a "listed front wall". Listed Buildings include structures such as bridges and memorials as well as actual buildings.
In the Scottish Borders a re-survey of the existing lists is underway, but it will be some years before this is complete. In the meantime there are a number of "listable" buildings that are not included on the statutory list.
In Scotland there are three categories of listing: Category A, Category B and Category C(S). Further information on Listed Buildings.
There remain some buildings that are listed category C but this category is being phased out and any such buildings are not statutorily listed.
Special permission for alterations or development of Listed Buildings is required. This is called Listed Building Consent (sometimes referred to as LBC).
