Historic Sites: how do we look after them?

Archaeological and historic sites are an unique source of information about the past. They offer great opportunities for scientific study and for popular interest through education and interpretation. For these reasons it is crucial that measures are in place to ensure that this important resource is saved for future generations.

Good management provides the best protection for these sites. Some are of national importance and are safeguarded in law as Scheduled Ancient Monuments.  Management of this type of site is carried out through Historic Scotland. Please note that both these links are to Historic Scotland's web site.

Advice on looking after most archaeological and historical sites can be gained from the Archaeology Officer (contact details below).

The planning process seeks to resolve the need to safeguard the past as a source of information with demands for more housing and other pressures. As part of this process, developers may be asked to carry out archaeological investigations.

The information contained in the our Historic Environment Record, and the advice of qualified archaeological staff, plays a major part in the making of such decisions.
