Summary

The new Smoke Free Law for Scotland comes into effect at 6am on Sunday March 26 2006.  The law aims to protect workers and the general public from the harmful effects of breathing in other people's smoke (also called 'passive smoking').

When the new law is in place smoking in enclosed public places will be an offence, as will allowing other people to smoke.  Enclosed public places include all bars, restaurants and shops and most workplaces.

In Borders a local working group has produced an contact sheet for employers which lists local sources of information for people who have concerns or worries about how the new law affects them.  Information on the Smoking, Health and Social Care (Scotland) Act 2005 can be accessed via the "clearing the air" website. Alternatively a useful list of contacts is available should you wish to make seperate enquiries.
