Balanced Nutritional Content

One of the main recommendations made by the report was the establishment of nutrient standards for school lunches. We started to produce menus that were working towards meeting these standards in August 2003. These work on a 20 day cycle. Primary school "traditional menus" are being examined by the Health Promotion Unit at the Borders General Hospital and checked for a balanced approach to nutritional content. We hope to finalise the primary menus by December 2004. To aid this we are also looking at the 5 primary School "cash cafeterias" to see if we can replace them with traditional school meals service.

Then we will carry out the same exercise with Secondary School menus. As these are all self selection, the process will take longer and is unlikely to be finalised until December 2006.
