School Review Summary Report

The review programme

The review programme comprised four areas:

  • Self-evaluation
  • Pupils’ learning experiences
  • Leadership – the authority focus

1.      The review process

A team from Quality Services and a peer reviewer reviewed Wilton Centre (Primary) in March of 2007.  The review team used the level five illustrations from How good is our school? (HGIOS) as its frame of reference and made their evaluation on the basis of evidence provided by the school and their own observations.  The results of their findings are given below.

In order to make their evaluations, the team consulted a number of school documents including the school improvement plan, interviewed pupils, staff and parents/carers from within the centre and relevant mainstream schools as well as a range of staff from external agencies, and observed learning and teaching.  In total, ten lessons / worksessions were observed.

2.      Key strengths of the Centre

The Centre demonstrated particular strengths in the following areas:

  • the excellent team work
  • the range of opportunities for staff discussion
  • the quality of staff and pupil reflection
  • the range of approaches to Personal and Social Development (PSD)

3.      Main action points for the Centre

  • the continued involvement of parents/carers and pupils, and involvement of external agencies and mainstream schools in self-evaluation and improvement planning
  • the implementation of formal monitoring procedures
  • the development of joint protocols for consistent and effective communication between mainstream schools and the Centre prior to, during and post placement
  • jointly with the Local Authority the development of a strategy for communication with mainstream schools about the purpose / function / admissions /  operation of the Centre.

4.      What happens now

The school, together with the Education department, will write an action plan to address the main points for action.  This will form part of the Centre’s improvement plan.  The school QIO will continue to support the Centre in addressing the main action points.  The school will report on progress made in June 2008.
