Drugs

A drug is a plant or chemical which can change, a person’s behaviour, their state of mind and the way their body works. They can be taken in four different ways: Swallowed – as a fluid or tablet, where it is taken into the stomach and then absorbed into the bloodstream; Injected – directly into the bloodstream, into a muscle or under the skin; Smoked – where the drug contained in the smoke is taken into the lungs and then enters the bloodstream; Snorted – where the drug is sniffed up the nose and passes through a tiny layer of skin called the membrane and passes into the bloodstream.

Types of Drugs

There are many different kinds of drugs which have different effects on the human brain. They are divided into 3 groups:

Downers (Depressants)

These drugs slow the brain down. They are also referred to as ‘downers’.

Uppers (Stimulants)

These drugs speed the brain up and makes you think you have lots of energy. They are also referred to as ‘uppers’

Confusers (Hallucinogens)

These drugs are also known as psychedelics. They can play tricks on your mind and make you see things that aren’t actually there.
