School Review Summary Report
Ednam Primary School
A team from Quality Services and peer reviewers reviewed Ednam Primary School in March 2005. The review team used the level four illustrations from How good is our school? (HGIOS) as its frame of reference and made its evaluation on the basis of evidence provided by the school and their own observations.
The review programme comprised four areas:
- Self-evaluation
- Planning for improvement
- The use of information and communications technology in learning and teaching - the authority focus
- The school's progress towards developing formative assessment, in particular sharing learning outcomes and peer and self evaluation - the school’s choice
The team consulted a number of school documents, including the school improvement plan, interviewed samples of pupils, staff and parents, and observed learning and teaching. In total, six lessons were observed. The results of their findings are given below.
Strengths of the school
Of the areas reviewed the school demonstrated particular strengths in the following areas:
- Reflective and evaluative teaching staff
- Use of ICT to enhance teaching and learning across the curriculum
- Confidence of pupils in the use of ICT
- Pupil self evaluation Positive and supportive relationship between the School Board and the school.
Areas for development by the school
The school should
- make head teacher monitoring processes more systematic and rigorous;
- improve evaluative nature of reporting on standards and quality;
- formalise the involvement of parents in self evaluation and school improvement procedures;
- ensure priorities in school improvement plan are relevant, achievable and manageable.
What happens now?
Supported by the review co-ordinator and the school's Quality Improvement Officer, the school will produce an action plan, which will address the identified areas for development. These will feature as part of the school improvement plan for 2005 -06.
