School Review Summary Report
Jedburgh Grammar School
The review programme
The review programme comprised four areas:
1. Self-evaluation
2. Planning for improvement
3. The use of information and communications technology (ICT) to support learning and teaching
(the Authority’s choice)
4. Supporting students– Information File (the school’s choice).
The review process
A team from Quality Services and a peer reviewer visited Jedburgh Grammar School in December 2004. The review team used the level four illustrations from How Good is Our School (HGIOS) as its frame of reference and made their evaluation on the basis of evidence provided by the school and their own observations. The results of their findings are summarised below.
In order to make its evaluation, the team examined school documents, including the school improvement plan, consulted with representative groups of students, staff and parents and observed learning and teaching. The review team also focused on the work of a sample of 4 Departments in the school. These Departments were, art and design, home economics, mathematics and science-biology.
Key strengths of the school
Of the areas reviewed the school demonstrated particular strength in:
- The content of the Supporting Students information file
Main action points for the school
- The SMT should identify and implement a clearer and more rigorous whole school and departmental self-evaluation process using quality indicators including HGIOS. The school should also consider how students and parents can be involved in this process.
- The SMT and teachers need to identify and implement strategies to evaluate the quality of students’ learning experiences.
- The SMT should develop and implement a clear and transparent school improvement planning process involving all staff, students and parents and ensure that the plan’s progress is regularly evaluated by staff, students and parents.
- The SMT should, along with staff, develop a whole school policy for the use of ICT to support students’ learning across the curriculum.
- The SMT and staff should ensure that the supporting pupils file is reflected in teachers’ planning for differentiation.
What happens now ?
The Headteacher, in consultation with the review coordinator and the school Quality Improvement Officer, will produce an action plan in response to the action points identified in the review report. This action plan will be incorporated into the school improvement plan for 2005-06.
