Cockburnspath Summary Review Report 2005

Quality Services

School Review Summary Report

Cockburnspath Primary School

The review process

A member of the Quality Services and a peer reviewer reviewed Cockburnspath Primary School in May 2005. The review team used the level four illustrations form How good is our school? (HGIOS) as its frame of reference. The team made their evaluation on the basis of evidence provided by the school, consultation with representative groups of pupils, staff and parents and their own reading and observations. The results of their findings are summarised below.

The review programme comprised three areas:

1. Self-evaluation

2. Planning for Improvement

3. The use of information and communications technology (ICT) to support learning and

teaching.

Key strengths of the school

Of the areas reviewed the school demonstrated particular strengths in the following areas:

  • The school improvement plan was clear and well organised
  • Staff were reflective practitioners

Areas for development by the school

  • The school should develop a consultation programme to engage regularly with staff, pupils, parents and others in the self-evaluation process.
  • The school should develop a more systematic, formalised self-evaluation process. There should be clearer evidence of self-evaluation activities taking place and more consistent use of HGIOS.
  • The school should consult more effectively with parents and pupils on the school improvement planning process.
  • The school should develop a clear policy and an effective programme for the use of ICT. This should support pupils’ learning and teaching experiences and expand the range of ICT resources and software.

What happens now?

Supported by the review co-ordinator and the school Quality Improvement Officer, the school will produce an action plan in response to the areas for development identified in the review report. This action plan will be incorporated into the school improvement plan for 2005-06.
