School Review Summary Report
Burnfoot Community School
A team from the Quality Services reviewed Burnfoot Community School in May / June 2005. The review team used the level four illustrations from How good is our school? (HGIOS) as its frame of reference and made their evaluation on the basis of evidence provided by the school and their own observations.
In order to make their evaluations, the team consulted a number of school documents, including the school development plan, interviewed samples of pupils, staff and parents, and observed learning and teaching. In total, nineteen lessons were observed.
The review programme comprised four areas:
- Self-evaluation
- Planning for improvement
- The use of information and communications technology in learning and teaching - the authority focus
- Meeting pupils' needs - the school’s choice
Key strengths of the school
Of the areas reviewed, the school demonstrated particular strengths in:
- the strong sense of teamwork;
- the well planned and focussed consultation cycle;
- the very good use of ICT to support learning and teaching;
- the management and deployment of support staff;
- celebrating success.
Main action points for the school
The school should:
- implement a programme for classroom monitoring;
- produce a summary Standards & Quality report to parents;
- improve communication with and involvement of parents;
- produce a policy for the use of ICT to support learning and teaching across the curriculum.
What happens now?
The headteacher, in consultation with the review co-ordinator and the school quality improvement officer, will produce an action plan in response to the action points identified in the review. This action plan will be incorporated into the school improvement plan for the 2005-06 session.
