Quality Services Review Summary Report 07
Heriot Primary School Review
The review programme
The review programme comprised three areas:
1 Self-evaluation
2 Pupils’ learning experiences
3 Leadership - the authority focus
The review process
A team from the Quality Services reviewed Heriot Primary School in May 2007. The review team used the level four illustrations from How good is our school? (HGIOS?) as its frame of reference and made their evaluation on the basis of evidence provided by the school and their own observations. The results of their findings are given below.
In order to make their evaluations, the team consulted a number of school documents, including the school improvement plan, interviewed samples of pupils, staff and parents, and observed learning and teaching. In total, nine lessons were observed.
Key strengths of the school
Of the areas reviewed, the school demonstrated particular strengths in:
• Excellent learning experiences observed in some lessons
• Opportunities and training for pupils to work collaboratively
• The use of conversational French in all classes
• Teamwork and the strong sense of community within the school
• Close links and collaborative working with neighbouring schools
Main action points for the school
The school should:
• Develop parental involvement in self evaluation and in the learning experiences of their children in school
• Develop strategies for giving feedback to pupils about their next steps in learning
• Develop further the use of milestone predictors to ensure appropriate pace and progress for pupils
• Develop distributed leadership across the school
What happens now?
The headteacher, in consultation with the review co-ordinator and the school quality improvement officer, will produce an action plan in response to the action points identified in the review. This action plan will be incorporated into the school improvement plan for the 2007 – 2008 session.
