Internet Filtering Categories

Scottish Borders Council Library & Information Services applies filtering on Public Access PCs to prevent the display of obscene or offensive material in libraries and to prevent the equipment being used to access illegal materials such as child pornography and terrorism.

The categories that are blocked for everyone are:-

  • Internet Watch Foundation categories (illegal sites, child pornography, and criminally obscene or racist sites)
  • Racism & Hate
  • Illegal or questionable
  • Militancy & Extremism
  • Sex & nudity
  • Violence

Children’s access is more heavily filtered to prevent access to inappropriate sites.

Sometimes a valid site will be blocked by the filter if the individual URL (site address) is unknown.  If you feel this has happened please tell library staff.

Individual sites that are blocked can be checked by staff and where appropriate access allowed.

Filtering Access Request forms are available in all libraries.  Please ask library staff.
