ScotlandsPeople Public Library Scheme

Scottish ancestry? - Find out more at the only official Scottish genealogical website

About the Scheme

ScotlandsPeople is one of the largest online sources of original genealogical information.  With over 50 million records to access, the site offers you an opportunity to trace your roots.  Public Library services and the Scottish Library Information Council (SLIC) have been working to offer access to information held on ScotlandsPeople at a preferential rate.  The scheme aims to encourage people to develop their ICT skills and their interest in family history through using this unique resource.  The site was launched in January 09

What is ScotlandsPeople?

ScotlandsPeople is available over the Internet, from public libraries and at home, operated on behalf of the General Register Office for Scotland, the National Archives of Scotland and the Court of the Lord Lyon by Scotland Online.  You can search statutory records of births, deaths and marriages, old parish records, census records and wills and testaments in Scotland.

How much does it cost?

A charge is made for some of the services and other services are free of charge.  This system uses a system of “credits” for various operations. Credits can be bought through public libraries at preferential rates for searching and viewing information on births, deaths and marriages.   A special Starter account offers a 50% discount at £6 for 60 credits.  Top up credits have a 20% discount at £4.80 for 30 credits

These credits also remain valid for an extended period of time.  The scheme aims to encourage personal interest in family history and is not open to commercial researchers.
