How, When and Where to Pay

Details of the amounts due are shown on your bill.

 

  • Council Tax is normally payable in 10 monthly  instalments (minimum £5) payable on the 1st of each month from April to January inclusive. 
  • Business Rates are normally payable in 10 monthly instalments payable on the 1st of each month from May to February inclusive.   

 

If monthly instalments are shown on the bill, you may as an alternative, make payment of Council Tax or Business Rates in a single amount. Details of the single payment amount and due date are shown on your bill.  For Council Tax, you will receive a discount of 3.5% if you pay in this manner.

 

It is essential that payments are made ON OR BEFORE THE DUE DATE.

 

You may of course pay your Council Tax or Business Rates in advance of the due date.  You must not, however, allow your payments to fall into arrears.

 

Payments

 

The Council offers various ways for you to pay:

 

Direct Debit

The easiest way to set up a Direct Debit is to fill in our online form. Forms are also available to download for Council Tax and Business Rates which you can print, complete, and return to us or alternatively a Direct Debit form is usually issued along with your bill.   

 

Home or Telephone Banking

You will need the details of the Council's bank account, which are:

  • Bank of Scotland, Newtown St. Boswells
  • Sort code - 80-17-91
  • Account number - 00217929

All payments must include your Council Tax/Business Rates account number, as shown on your bill.

 

Internet Payments

You can pay your Council Tax or Business Rates online using our secure server, 24 hours a day (except between 17:30 and 17:45 daily)  You can also use this method to pay Community Charge.

 

Automated Telephone Payments: To pay your Council Tax or Business Rates by telephone please call 01835 826500.  This service is available 24 hours a day (except between 17:30 and 17:45 daily) and can also be used to pay Community Charge.

 

In Person

Your Council Tax or Business Rates can be paid at any of the Council’s Contact Centres. Please take your invoice and/or quote your full Council Tax/Business Rates account number on the back of your cheque/postal order when you go to make payment.

 

By Post

Cheques and postal orders should be made payable to 'Scottish Borders Council'. Please write your Council Tax/Business Rates account number and your name and address on the back of your cheque or postal order which should be sent to: Scottish Borders Council, PO Box 13601, Newtown St. Boswells, Melrose, TD6 OYB.
