What if I don't pay?
Council Tax
- We will send you a written notice for the outstanding amount to be paid WITHIN 7 DAYS.
- If this happens again we will send you a further reminder.
- If there's a further instalment remaining unpaid after the due date, you will have to pay the full year's balance.
- If you don't pay, you are liable to pay the arrears plus the amount due for the remainder of the year.
Legal action
The Council can take legal proceedings for recovery of the total amount due (after serving a notice requiring payment of that balance within 14 days). If this happens the Sheriff will grant a Summary Warrant against you. This means you will have to pay a 10% surcharge to the Council Tax outstanding and a Sheriff Officer will recover the arrears, in other words can arrest your wages, or bank accounts. In addition you will have to tell the Council your employer's name and address and details of any Bank or Building Society accounts you have.
We don't want to have to bring any action against you. If you are having problems paying then contact Scottish Borders Council directly.
Business Rates
Unfortunately if you don't make payments by the due dates, the Council may take legal action against you.
We would recommend that you pay your rates bill by Direct Debit, which ensures payments are all met on time, and you have peace of mind.
