Business Rates - how are they calculated?

Business Rates are calculated by multiplying the rateable value of your property by the national poundage rate.  The national poundage rate (paid by businesses with a rateable value of £29,000 or less) is 45.8p for 2008/09.

If your property has a rateable value of over £29,000 then you will have to pay a supplement on the poundage rate of 0.4p which means the total higher poundage rate is 46.2p for 2008/09.

Queries

All questions about the rateable value of your property should go to the Assessor. If you think you have been incorrectly charged, and it has nothing to do with the valuation of your property, then appeal in writing to the Head of Revenues and Benefits, within 28 days of receiving your bill.
