Trading Standards is responsible for enforcing and providing advice on United Kingdom and European Law.
Our areas of responsibility include:
- Safety of Consumer Goods
- Price display and price reduction claims
- Weights and Measures
- Anti-counterfeiting
- Animal Health and Welfare
- Fair Trading practices
We also provide an Advice Service:
We offer a free advice service on all aspects of consumer law, both Trading Standards and civil law. In addition, we provide a confidential money advice service to those with debt problems.
We are based at St Dunstans in the High Street, Melrose, where the full team of 15 officers is located. We are open to the public 5 days per week and are able to offer home visits.
A Business Advice Service:
We operate the 'Home Authority Principle'. This means that if your business is based in the Scottish Borders we will do our best to provide you with up to date information that is relevant to your business, through a nominated contact Officer. We aim to help your business stay competitive by providing specialist knowledge.
We also have a laboratory to provide accurate determinations of mass and calibration of your own equipment, using traceable standards.
And a Money Advice Service:
Our free and confidential service will support you, no matter how large or small your debts are.

We aim to abide by our commitments and provide a professional service at all times.
If you are dissatisfied with our service please let us know.
Your complaint will be acknowledged within 5 working days and a full response given within 20 working days of receipt.
If we are at fault we will attempt to correct the matter as soon as possible.
If we do not believe that we are at fault we will give the reasons for our decision in writing.
If you are still unhappy, you may refer your complaint to the Director of Technical Services. Please ask for a copy of the Council's leaflet "How to Make a Complaint" at any Contact Centre, which details the complaints procedure in full.
