Social Enterprise

There are 3 economic systems

  • Private sector - profit oriented
  • Public sector – public service, planned provision
  • Social sector/ social economy.

Depending on your perspective, social enterprises might be said to form a part of the social economy, the private or the public sector. Social enterprises can be social firms, cooperatives, charities with a trading arm, development trusts, community businesses, credit unions, employee owned businesses and intermediate labour market organisations.  A more detailed definition of a social enterprise is available.

Social enterprises are ‘more than profit’ organisations as they combine the aim of creating profits with achieving social aims.

The Scottish Borders Social Enterprise Group was formed in early 2002 and it has a funding arm called the Social Enterprise Initiative
