Fishing

A small, but locally important, sea fishing fleet uses the small harbours along the Berwickshire coast. The local fishing industry has had to cope with recent changes in quotas, dictated by the European Commission (external website). For more information on the main control over fishing, read the Common Fisheries Policy (external website).

A new North Sea Regional Advisory Council has been set up.  The first meeting was held on 4 November 2004, with delegates from the UK, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland, France and Spain.  Regional Advisory Councils consist of representatives from the fisheries sector, environmental organisations, consumer groups and government officials.

A new approach to managing the marine environment is being developed. The Scottish Sustainable Marine Environment Initiative has four pilot projects: the Shetland Islands; the Berwickshire coast; the Sound of Mull; and the Firth of Clyde.
