The Housing Strategy team have been involved in the following research studies in relation to the housing needs of people in the Borders.

Strategic Development for South East Scotland (SESplan)

This research was undertaken by City of Edinburgh, Midlothian, East Lothian, Fife (south), West Lothian and Scottish Borders  to provide a housing need and demand assessment for the South East Scotland area. Drawing upon work previously undertaken for the Fife, Lothian and Borders areas, the assessment was finalised in March 2010.

Exploration into Housing Support Needs

The Council commissioned DTZ to provide evidence on the housing support needs of specific groups in the Borders, including:

  • older people
  • people with physical disabilities
  • people with learning disabilities
  • people with mental health problems
  • young people leaving care
  • people with substance misuse problems
  • people escaping domestic violence
  • offenders/ex-prisoners
  • homeless households with support needs
  • black minority ethnic groups (BME).

The Exploration into Housing Support Needs in the Scottish Borders final report May 2010 presents the findings of the study including conclusions and recommendations.

Local Housing Need and Demand Assessment

Outside Research and Development were commissioned in 2006 to undertake a Local Housing Assessment for the Scottish Borders. The aim of the assessment was to find out the main factors which affect the housing needs of people in the area, including changes and trends. This was updated in February 2011 with the final report now available.

Exploring the Housing Needs of Minority Ethnic Communities in Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and the Scottish Borders

In 2007, Communities Scotland (with City of Edinburgh, East Lothian, Fife, Midlothian, Scottish Borders and West Lothian Councils) commissioned ODS Consulting to undertake research into the housing circumstances, needs and preferences of minority ethnic communities, excluding Gypsies/Travellers, who reside each of the local authority areas. The research is used to inform future strategic planning and service provision by stakeholders operating in the area.
