There are a number of resources available in the Scottish Borders if you are researching your family tree.

Heritage Hub: The Scottish Borders Archive, Family and Local History Centre

The main research centre for family history in the Scottish Borders is the Heritage Hub. The Heritage Hub holds archives, records, indexes and resources to allow you to search for your ancestors. Historical copies of the Register of Electors can be viewed at the Archives Service, Heritage Hub, Hawick. For further information visit the Heritage Hub website.

Registration service

Our Registration Service provides copies of Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates after 1855 to help you research you family history. Registrars also have access to Old Parish Records for Births and Marriages pre 1855. For details of the service offered and charges visit our Registration service.


Our Library Service provides public access computers to access family history websites such as Scotlands People and have collections of published indexes and histories to help you with your family history.  For example access to Scotland's People the official Scottish genealogy resource. Credits can be bought at preferential rates during introductory courses at our libraries for searching and viewing information on births, deaths and marriages.

Cemeteries and churchyards

Neighbourhood Services provides information on cemeteries and churchyards to help you trace where your ancestors are buried. For further information on this service visit searching burial records.
