A strategic environmental assessment (SEA) is a method of considering and evaluating the likely impact of a public plan, programme or strategy (PPS) on the environment.
SEA is needed for the following sectors:
- agriculture
- fisheries
- forestry
- transportation
- waste management
- industry
- energy
- land use.
The main actions of the SEA process are the preparation of the following reports:
- pre screening
- screening
- scoping
- environmental
- post adoption statements.
The SEA process requires consultation with the consultative authorities and the public. The statutory consultative authorities are:
- Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH)
- Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA)
- Historic Scotland (HS).
