Find out if you live in a listed building by checking Historic Scotland's - Listed Buildings search.
Listing is the process by which buildings of special architectural or historic interest are protected. The listing of buildings is undertaken by Historic Scotland. A listing applies to the whole of the building or structure named on the listing.
Buildings are assigned to one of three categories depending upon their importance:
Category A
Buildings of national or international importance, either architectural or historic, or fine little altered examples of some particular period or style.
Category B
Buildings of regional or more than local importance, or major examples of some particular period, style or building type which may have been altered.
Category C(S)
Buildings of local importance, lesser examples of any period, style or building type, as originally constructed or moderately altered; and simple traditional buildings which group well with others in Categories A and B.
Further information on listed buildings, including a search facility for listed building records, is available from Historic Scotland.
Listed building consent
Listed building consent is the system by which we check any changes to a listed building to ensure that they are appropriate and sympathetic to the character of the building. Listing is a mechanism to help manage change to listed buildings.
