Reporting traffic lights problems
BEAR Scotland
The road lighting network is an important asset in the Scottish Borders. Road Lighting must be kept and enhanced where suitable to promote:
- economic development
- tourism
- social inclusion
- reduce the fear of crime
- road safety.
The Scottish Borders is Scotland's sixth largest local authority area and has around 20,000 road lights. The low density population means that the road lighting provision is spread over a wide area in a variety of towns, villages and small hamlets.
Road lighting maintenance
The maintenance of the network can be separated into four main categories:
1. Road lights includes work such as:
- lamp replacement
- column replacement
- new schemes for housing
- major road improvements
- road safety improvements.
2. Traffic lights and pedestrian crossings includes such work as:
- lamp replacement
- pole replacement
- new infrastructure
- major improvement schemes.
3. Flood lighting and festive lights includes such work as:
- lamp replacement
- decoration of Christmas trees
- provision of festive lighting infrastructure to support Community schemes.
4. CCTV includes such work as:
- cleaning of cameras and maintenance
- up-grade to installations, replacing cameras.
Trunk roads
Certain major roads known as trunk roads are not our responsibility. These include:
- A7 south of Galashiels
- A68
- A1

Transport Scotland is responsible for trunk roads and queries should be made to their operating company BEAR Scotland with regards to road lighting on these roads.
