Scottish Borders Council is pleased to announce the relaunch of the Borders Archaeological Forum at a one day conference entitled “Past, Present, and Future: Archaeology in the Scottish Borders”.

 

The conference will deal with developments and discoveries in the Scottish Borders area.  Various speakers will present papers under five broad themes on topics as diverse as community archaeology, aerial photography and developer funded excavations.  The conference will be held at the Ormiston Institute in Melrose on Saturday 30th September.

 

Theme 1: At the Coal Face - Management and Interpretation

Rory McDonald (Scottish Borders Council): Past, Present and Future; SBC Archaeology Service

John Dent (Scottish Borders Council): Heritage Interpretation in the Scottish Borders

 

Theme 2: People Power - Community Archaeology

Paul Frodsham: Community Archaeology in Northumberland National Park (tbc)

Trevor Cowie (Peeblesshire Archaeological Society): The Eddleston Parish Project

Jim Herbert (Border Archaeological Society): The Medieval Defences of Berwick

Tam Ward (Biggar Museum Trust): Upper Tweed reservoirs; submerged archaeological landscapes

 

Theme 3: Archaeology in Action - Surveys and Excavations

Dave Cowley (RCAHMS): RCAHMS Aerial Survey; progress and prospects

Graeme Wilson (EASE Archaeology): Archaeology on the edge; the Berwickshire coastal survey

George Geddes (Headland Archaeology): Waverley Mill, Galashiels

Simon Stronach (Headland Archaeology): Coldingham Priory

 

Theme 4: Treasure Trove - Recent Finds

Fraser Hunter (National Museums of Scotland): Iron Age and Roman finds

Theme 5: Looking at the Big Picture - Historic Landscapes

Richard Tipping (University of Stirling): Measuring the scale of historic landscape change; integrating archaeology and geomorphology at Dunglass Dean, Cockburnspath

Ian Parker (RCAHMS): The changing landscapes of Roxburgh and its hinterland; RCAHMS and other survey work at Roxburgh in 2006
