Community Wardens Scheme
Background
Established in November 2004, the Community Wardens service is now a part of the Antisocial Behaviour Unit, although at present the funding is only in place to sustain the service through until March 2009.
Where do they work?
At the moment they work in Galashiels and Kelso with some outreach work to Jedburgh.
How many do we have?
We have five Community Wardens at present which allows us to have two to cover Kelso and Jedburgh, two to cover Galashiels and a Senior Community Warden to cover any shortages due to holidays and training etc.
What are the aims of the service?
- To help reduce fear of crime
- To help in reducing levels of antisocial behaviour
- To help reduce the opportunities for crime
What can Community Wardens do for me?
- Provide high visibility patrols to deter antisocial behaviour
- Arrange for the removal of graffiti or repair vandalism in public areas
- Issue dog fouling and litter dropping fines
- Act as a professional witness
- Assist with community projects
- Report breaches of antisocial behaviour orders (ASBO’s)
When do they work?
The Community Wardens operate over a seven day shift pattern and will either be on duty from 8:00am to 4:00pm or 2:00pm to 10:00pm. You can however contact them on the freephone number (listed below) within the Antisocial Behaviour Unit which is open during office hours. Your message will be taken and someone will be in touch the next working day.
How effective are the community wardens?
The success of the service lies in the amount of community engagement that the Wardens are able to have with members of the public which provides good results in reducing levels of antisocial behaviour. This means that we are unable to allow the wardens to work out of their specified areas.
The evaluation report which was produced in 2006 highlights just how successful the wardens have been. To view the report click here… View the report
How can I contact a Community Warden?
You can contact the Warden Co-ordinator on freephone 0800 028 5711 or online
