Scottish Borders White Ribbon Campaign 2007
Scottish Borders White Ribbon Campaign (2007) is part of the largest collaborative campaign developed and run by men which aims to end men's violence against women. The campaign was founded in 1991 when a handful of men in Canada decided they had a responsibility to urge men to speak out against violence against women. They decided that wearing a white ribbon would be a symbol of men’s opposition to men’s violence against women. Since 1991 the campaign has grown and is now renowned and supported worldwide, with the UK branch of WRC starting in 2004 and the Scottish Campaign in 2006.
Although most Scottish men do not commit or condone the abuse of women, too many men remain silent about the widespread abuse of women in Scotland. To some extent, this is because men and women in Scotland remain unaware of the scale and severity of the abuse.

The facts are that:
- 2 women in the UK each week are killed by a violent male partner or ex-partner (Women and Equality Unit, Living Without Fear 1999)
- 1 in 4 women in the UK will experience an act of domestic violence at some point in her lifetime (Mirrlees-Black, Domestic Violence: Findings from a new British Crime Survey: Self-completion Questionnaire, England & Wales, 1999)
- In Scottish Borders there were a total of 659 domestic incidents reported to the police in the year 2006/07(Lothian and Borders Police, G Division, 2007)
- 90% of abusers are male and 90% of victims are female
The Scottish Borders Community Safety Partnership, through the Domestic Abuse Working Group, will be supporting and promoting this campaign across the Scottish Borders for a two week period commencing on Monday, 26th November 2007. Throughout this fortnight we aim to collect 2007 pledges from men in the Scottish Borders.
We would like to involve as many local men as possible and would be grateful if you would commit to supporting this campaign and help the Scottish Borders to stand up against violence against women.
What are we asking of men in the Scottish Borders? Simply that you support the campaign by adding your name to a pledge to “never to condone, commit or remain silent about violence against women”. For those adding their name to a pledge we also ask them to wear a white ribbon (which we will provide at no cost when collecting your pledge card) for two weeks to symbolise the support they have given for this campaign.
What will we do with the Pledge Cards? The pledge cards will be counted daily and a running total publicised throughout the campaign. The campaign will conclude with a public display of all the pledge cards. After this they will be stored safely, remain the property of the WRC Scottish Borders and will not be shared with anyone else. Pledges so far
