Summary
The quality of the environment is one of the Scottish Borders' greatest assets. It adds to the quality of life of Borderers and visitors alike. It also forms a strong basis for investment in jobs, such as those in tourism.
Many things can damage this local resource. For example our increasing use of the car can upset rural peace and quiet and affect air quality. The challenge doesn't stop there as many activities have wider impacts. For example, use of the car also contributes to global warming, which is partially caused by our use of energy from fossil fuels.
Scottish Borders Council is responsible for leading the New Ways Environmental Strategy process, and it plays a key role in fulfilling the obligations and commitments of the New Ways partners to sustainability and the Local Agenda 21 process.
